VB/VBA Application + Template for MS Word

Bidding Time:
10/12/2004 12:36 - 16/12/2004 00:00
Budget:
$100-500
Status:
Closed

Job Type:
Visual Basic, Windows
Description:

MLA style formatting software for Microsoft Word

Project Summary:
This program will provide the proper MLA style formatting and citations to a
Word document. MLA is one of the many commonly used formats for writing term
papers, reports, scholarly papers, etc. This program provides forms for entering
information about sources (books, journals, etc) and then properly formats the
source information for insertion into the Word document.

How it should work:
The program will install a template into the proper directory for use in Word.
Links to a website and local documentation files will be under the Programs menu
of Windows. A user would select the template to start a new file with. When
loaded, it will prompt the user for their name, paper title, course title and
other basics needed to set up the paper. This information will be inserted into
the document in the right places. By default, the paper will have the proper
margins, font sizes, page numbering, etc.
When this template is being used, there will be a new top menu option in Word
entitled MLA. From this menu, the user will be able to create new citations and
perform all maintenance functions. This menu will also include an option linking
to a website and an option linking to local documentation.
To enter a citation, a user selects the citation type from the menu, and enters
information about the source into a form. Part of the citation will be inserted
into the document at the cursor location, and the full citation will be added to
the full list of citations that is at the end of the document. The full list of
citations should maintain the proper alphabetical order.
Some citations can be complex, such as books, while some only require a few
lines of input. Please review some examples before bidding. The way that this
program should work for complex citations would be initially only prompt for the
common information, with additional options on a second input page or separate
tab. Forms for entry of citation information should be clear and provide error
alerts/checking for required data fields being empty.

Word Compatability: Word 2000 and all versions to present day

OS Compatability: Windows 98 and all newer (98, ME, 2000, XP).

Installer:
An installer program is required to place this add-in in the proper place for
use with Word, put the template in the proper directory, as well as install
links to the program, a website, and local documentation into Program Files.
Multiple installers may be required to accommodate the different operation
systems.

Resources:
An easy way to understand how this should work would be to look at an existing
example:
http://www.referencepointsoftware.net/mla/tutorials/show-startnew2.html (flash
video of how program works)
http://www.referencepointsoftware.net/mla/tutorials.htm (main page of examples)
Modern Language Association Official Site
http://www.mla.org/

Project Coordination:
We would want to coordinate the Menu and overall "feel" of the program
operation to insure usability. To provide adequate feedback, we would like to
review the program at different stages of development. We want to be flexible in
the specific programming requirements as long as the program looks the way it
should and works right. We have allotted 30 calendar days for this project. We
require all source code, code libraries used, and any other source materials.
Your unaltered code will be compiled and compared to the executable you supply
as one of the tests of your work. You will not be responsible for any formal
documentation for the program.

This program is simply takes user input and puts it in the right places, but
must work without problems, and have very easy to understand menus for input.
Obviously, the program must properly format all citations. There are literally
dozens of similar programs like this out there. See the examples listed above
for a good idea of how this should work. Ours would be different, but similar in
overall capability.
We will provide any further details required. Please contact us upfront about
any questions you may have.
