I want a script that has some of the features like the ones at
http://goshrink.com
I am interested in the Fast URL (shrink URL) feature at
http://goshrink.com/go/fasturl and the Custom URL (choose a short URL) feature
at http://goshrink.com/go/customurl and the Stats feature at
http://goshrink.com/go/stats
I would like the script to be able to work in the root directory and also in any
other directory ( example: www.mysite.com/go/xxx ) and to accept short and long
affiliate URLs including ones that contain characters such as ? = &
It seems that the best/easiest way to do this may be with a PHP script that
writes the redirects directly to an htaccess file and to use a simple counter
database for the stats, but I am open to suggestions.

After thinking about it for awhile I am wondering if it would be
best to use a MySQL database for the links/redirects and stats because text/flat
files may become unstable if the site has thousands of redirect links and hits
to calculate. Also, the entire process needs to be done in a way that will not
be too much of a burden to the server that the script is hosted on.
